PART 1 - Mel claims she just beat Dan at jogging, but he thinks she cheated by cutting through the park! Time for her victory treat. Chad saunters up and teases they get along very well. Not everyone is so lucky. Dan states they know. Mel asks about Abigail and notes her world must be turned upside down. Abigail is still upset about her dad, who vanished from her life. Mel wishes she could make her feel better and hopes she will let her father back into her life. Chad hopes everyone will be better soon. Dan feels the same, and acknowledges this is a tough time. He just could not imagine his daughter not talking to him. The mood becomes lighter as the conversation turns to Halloween. Mel insists Chad go costume shopping with her and Dan. She cheerfully walks off arm in arm with both guys. - Abigail opens the door to mama Jen's date, assuming it is Dan, but there stands Jack! She demands Jen tell her they are not reconciling and snaps at Jack not to touch her. She never wants to see him again! Jack patiently explains he understands he hurt her. Abigail retorts he disgusts her. Jen asks her to stop, before she says something she regrets. Abigail's hissy fit continues. Jack points out what is done is done and he must live with the consequences. He promises to work every single day to make this up to her. Jen would like a moment alone with their daughter. Jack obliges. Jen tells the angry girl he is still her father and they are a family. Abigail laments she is taking him back again. Jen reminds her she is an adult and must therefore work out her issues with her father. She adds she has her own life and must do what is best for her! - Roman has just given Sami a present at the loft. Tis a nice portfolio for his junior executive daughter. He is mighty proud and asks about her job. Sami breathes it is challenging and perfect. She and boss Madison were in grade school together in Colorado and she believes in her, says she is a natural. Roman praises Sami for having heart. He now wants to know if she has visited Marlena and John lately. Sami stammers she has been busy. Roman is suspicious. She could make time for her mother unless she did not want to. Sami sighs that Marlena and John are going through something heavy. Roman suggests she let them know she is on their side, that she believes he is innocent. Sami uncomfortably admits she cannot help but wonder whether John might be guilty. Stefano played games with his mind and he has memory lapses, so he might not even remember doing it! Father and daughter now head for the family pub, where they continue disagreeing at a table. Roman points out Sami needs to be there for her mom. Sami finally relents she will call her. Roman is unexpectedly summoned to the station, explains he needs to take a rain check for their lunch, and departs. - Rafe is at the police station. He is on the phone discussing the Swiss clinic employee. If he can testify that John was at the clinic and not the Paris café, then they will be able to prove his innocence. Rafe now ends the call with Carrie, advising her to be careful. Enter one jealous Austin, and he wants to know why the fair Carrie was calling Rafe, instead of her husband! Rafe drawls she is hard at work on the case of John Black. Austin is curious about Rafe's involvement. Rafe replies they both would like to find out the truth. Austin demands to know why he is in his wife's business. Rafe shuts the door and states Carrie wanted to make sure John got good protection, given that a brick was recently thrown through the window. Austin is still miffed about the advice Rafe gave him to drop the case. Rafe is not willing to argue, refers to them as family, and walks out. - Austin enters the pub as Roman leaves. He approaches Sami and tells her he does not know where Carrie is, but if she wants to know, then she should ask her husband! He updates her on Carrie's Europe trip to follow a lead, and Rafe's mysterious involvement. Sami notes they are working together. Austin righteously states there is a chain of command Rafe is supposed to be following. Cops are not supposed to take sides and help the defense. If the prosecuting attorney finds out, then Rafe is toast! - At the station, Rafe is on the phone once more when Commissioner Roman enters and solemnly orders him to end the call. "We need to talk about your job, Rafe." - At the pub, Sami is upset about the chances Rafe is taking. She accepts that he is doing it as he considers John family now. Austin complains of all the fighting he and Carrie have been experiencing. He is having a hard time seeing further than the mounting evidence against John. Sami feels the same way. They both want to believe in John but it is not easy. Sami recalls how upset Marlena was the night he stood up for the first time. She admitted she was very concerned about John. In fact, Sami believes there is a chance that John might have done what he was accused of and does not even remember! - Roman shuts the door and blinds in Rafe's office. He just received a concerned call from the FBI agent heading up their side of the John Black investigation. The agent informed him that Rafe has been assisting Carrie, aka the defense. He warns him to play this by the book and be straight with him. "Are you or are you not slipping Carrie information...?" Rafe admits he is. Roman accuses him of crossing the line. Rafe argues he must do what he can to prove John is innocent, as he is convinced that he is. Roman orders him to follow his rules. Rafe thinks there was a set up and he intends to prove it. Roman reminds him he must report to the police commissioner and not the defense attorney. He simply cannot have the integrity of the department compromised. Rafe will not back down. Roman realizes they are at an impasse. There is only one thing left to do about rebel Rafe. The FBI no longer wishes to have him as their liaison with the police department, and the police department no longer wants to have him around. Commissioner Roman demands his badge and his weapon.
