Roman is reading said newspaper at the town square café. A lady cop comes along and muses it is tough to believe. Roman wonders if she is his shadow today. She is and she is honored to have been assigned to this case. Roman explains the government is sending their own man down. This means before he comes, they have to do everything by the book and stay impartial. The investigation will start with Abe Carver! Then they will move onto others who were closely connected to the victim, if that is what one could call Stefano DiMera. One is someone Roman admits he used to care for greatly. Kate Roberts DiMera. Then there is also the honorable mayor, one EJ DiMera! The day is short, the list of suspects long, and so they get started ... - Abe Carver opens his front door to a beautiful morning. The bushes are adorned with pretty pink flowers. In contrast, the newspaper bears an ominous headline. The former mayor flashes back to his confrontation with Stefano. He recalls how his conscience prevented him from actually killing the phoenix, as planned. Inside, he discreetly discards the paper. Lexie comes down and notices. He did not wish to upset her, but she would like to know what happened and snatches it to have a look at just what went down. - Kate reads the article about Stefano and flashes back to threatening him. Ian opens the office door and remarks she must be thinking of Stefano. She claims it is hard to believe he is gone. Ian calls it a shock and adds she must also be relieved. Kate admits she knew he would never stop coming after her. Ian quips he too had firsthand experience of just how vindictive he was. Kate agrees and lists his wrongdoings against her. He even tried to take away her ability to make a living! She is clearly upset. Ian insists he would have fought him. Besides, he is dead. Kate thinks that will not stop him. Ian insists no man cheats death. "Not even Stefano DiMera." Kate's eyes cloud over with doubt. - Mayor EJ is going for a jog in his tracksuit. He stops for a rest in front of the Brady pub and flashes back to threatening Stefano. Sami comes along in a bright dress. She heard the news that Stefano is gone. EJ sighs but does not disagree. "Oh my God!" says she. She cannot imagine what he must be going through! He folds his arms and replies he appreciates her concern. She wonders if he is shocked. Somewhat. Sami sits beside him to discuss. After all his enemies, someone finally got to him. Sami nervously notes he is the phoenix and questions whether he is really dead ... - Kate explains that Stefano has been dead and undead numerous times. Ian coldly states he is certain he is in hell, where he belongs. Kate cries she feels terrible. Ian takes her hands and advises her to let it go. But he has one question about her walk yesterday. Did she go to the DiMera mansion? Kate wonders if he is asking whether she killed Stefano. "Did you?" says he. - Roman and the lady cop enter the Carver house, and he would like a word with Abe. Lexie insists on staying. Roman now informs Abe he is on the list of suspects. Lexie indignantly starts to defend him. Roman solemnly states his gun was used to kill Stefano! Lexie weakly stands up and gasps there is no way he did this. Roman still wants answers about the gun. Abe confesses he went over there and threatened him but did not kill him. Theo comes in and worriedly wonders what is going on. Roman covers that they are talking city business and praises his father as a smart man, one whose advice he would heed. Lexie takes the lad into the kitchen for breakfast. Once they are gone, Roman anxiously tells his friend it looks bad. Why did he lie about seeing Stefano last night? Abe grumbles the last thing ailing Lexie needed was to think he had done it. Roman will give him one more chance and advises him to update both him and the other cop present on everything that transpired. Abe frowns, then agrees to cooperate. He ventured to the mansion to confront Stefano for causing Lexie's condition. Roman is sorry he ever mentioned it to him. Abe continues. Stefano did not believe he would kill him. He was right, too. However, he did not trust himself enough and therefore in the last minute decided to leave his gun behind. He had a twisted fantasy that Stefano might actually use it to end his own life. Roman drawls someone beat him to it. Abe urges him to believe him. "I do," now whispers Lexie. Roman asks Abe to stay in town and come down to the station soon for a gunshot residue test. Lexie is anxious. Abe and Roman reassure her. Exit Roman and the apologetic lady officer. Lexie sighs and leans back in her husband's arms. She never for a minute doubted him. Abe appreciates her faith in him but does not want her to feel any stress. She calls him a kind and gentle man. He admits he came close to pulling the trigger. She points out he did not, but who did? - The kids are at camp, so Sami and EJ are alone when they enter her apartment. She pours them both coffee and presses him to tell if Stefano is really dead. EJ laments he identified him at the coroner. "He's dead." Sami now casually wonders about the suspects and points out EJ had a million reasons to want his father gone! - Ian advises Kate to tell him the truth so he can help her. Did she have anything to do with the death of her husband? Knock knock! Tis Roman with the lady cop. He wants a word with Kate. She agrees to cooperate and tells Ian he may leave. He reluctantly does just that, though he does not go far. Kate notes this must be important. Roman informs her they know her fingerprints were on the gun that killed Stefano. He demands she tell him exactly what happened yesterday ... - EJ confesses to Sami there were a lot of things to make him angry at Stefano, including the hoops he made him jump through. Sami reminds him he was his golden child. EJ flashes back to him rejecting him for not being his real son. He comes back to reality and ominously mutters one could not change his mind about certain things. But that does not matter now. Sami seems to worry about her position, but EJ insists her contract with Countess W is safe. Sami smiles smugly and points out HE is the new head of the DiMera family!
