PRELUDE TO A CHRISTMAS

- Sami comes in from the cold and shopping with Sydney and Johnny,
to the warmth of the family pub. Caroline hugs her little elves. Sami
thinks they could use a hot chocolate. Sydney mentions helping pick out grandma’s present. Johnny hushes her not to tell. Sami now informs curious Caroline that Ally is with Lucas. Sami is elated that Caroline is home where she belongs. She is glad to be spending the holidays as one should be with the people ones loves. Enter Rafe. The kids are thrilled to see him. He sits with them as they enjoy their hot chocolate and praises them for the presents donation. They note it was daddy’s idea. Rafe explains that is the spirit of Christmas. Sami stands by Caroline, who wonders why she is not with them. She suspects Sami has missed Rafe
as much as the kids. Sami asks her to come to the table with her but Caroline makes an excuse. Sami approaches and asks what is going on
as Sydney whispers to Johnny.  Rafe grins he had wondered what they want for Christmas. Sydney would like a penguin, just like Johnny’s.
Sami becomes emotional as she flashes back to the safe house and remembers Rafe bleeding. She informs Sydney those were hard to come by! She does not think it will be possible. Rafe points out sometimes the gift is not what matters, but that the person was trying to make you happy. A flashback is shown of Sami and Rafe at the safe house as his fever finally broke. Back to reality. Johnny decides he can share his penguin with Sydney. Rafe is impressed and drawls these kids are something. Sami smiles he has something to do with it.
- Theo cries at Lexie’s grave with papa Abe, who assures him they will
get through this first Christmas alone together. They turn to leave, only
to run into Chad and EJ, who has a bouquet of lilies. Theo is glad they came to see his mommy. Chad offers to take the lad to the car so Abe
and EJ can catch up. EJ praises Abe as a good fatha. Abe is grateful for that and points out his sweet son takes after his mom. EJ bends down
and places the lilies at Lexie’s grave. Abe admits he heard EJ was back
in the family fold. EJ mentions running Countess W and insists it was
his own decision. Abe, however, is extremely concerned. He fears that EJ has fallen under the diabolical influence of the wrong sister! He reminds him that Lexie tried to think of his better nature. EJ insists he continues
to honor her memory. Abe growls that Kristen stands for all that Lexie loathed. EJ argues she has changed and he has seen the evidence. Abe suggests Kristen might be cunning enough to fool them all! EJ calls him cynical. Abe calls it being real. That one is the antithesis of anything good. He warns EJ he should find another way to honor Lexie’s memory. He sternly wishes him a Merry Christmas and departs.
- Kristen is alone at the coffee house, searching for Brady Black on her computer. She smugly reads he recently purchased a rare photograph for
a whopping $15,000 and outbid many collectors. She feels the info will come in handy …
- Eric wants to be left alone and assures Nicole he is fine. She implores him to let her help him for she knows something is wrong. It is not the first time she has heard his night terrors. The tormented priest asks her to leave his bed, his room. She should go to Saint Mary’s. Now? Yes. She quietly steps away. Nicole is soon in the church and hides around the corner when Father Eric arrives. He makes the sign of the cross and begs the Lord for forgiveness. He cannot go on with these feelings. Nicole emerges and declares perhaps she is meant to help him. “I know what’s going on with you!” He doubts it. Nicole believes he is struggling with his attraction for her, the fact that he is being tempted. Eric chuckles and pours himself a coffee. She advises him not to beat himself up over it. Eric smiles that is sweet but this has nothing to do with him being in the least bit tempted by her. She is surprised. He admits his dreams are frequent and he does indeed remember what they are about. Nicole
urges him to talk to her. She is certain he will feel better. “Maybe,” he murmurs, his eyes filled with pain. He proceeds to tell her his story. It happened in the Congo. She promises not to tell anyone. He explains when he first arrived there as a photographer, his job was to document
the civil war. There was a priest in the village who escorted him around and introduced him to people. His compassion inspired many. He recalls there was a shy teenage girl who wanted to be a photographer and even took some shots. He laments she had talent. “Had?” nervously gasps Nicole. Eric laments the rebels showed up. They looted and burned the village. There was drinking. Nicole is horrified. He adds things got even worse. Their leader wanted to make an example of someone and grabbed the young girl. The man was holding her and put a gun to her head. Her mother begged him to spare her. Eric shouted to stop and insisted the people were innocent. The rebel smirked and declared the village could take her place. Eric froze. Nicole thinks anyone would have been afraid.  Eric frowns. But the priest, Father Ryan, offered himself in her place.
The bad man let the girl go, and then shot the priest on the heart. “It should have been me!” sobs Eric. Nicole blinks back her own tears.
- At the hospital Kayla gets off the phone with daughter Stephanie, disappointed that she is not coming home for the holidays. She will miss her.
- As the kids play around the pub, Sami asks Rafe what he is doing the rest of the day. She suggests he stick around, as the kids are having fun with him. He grins he feels the same way, then gets a call regarding an order from the commissioner. He now apologizes to Sami. She understands  that duty calls. He grins maybe another time, then tells the kids he must depart but will see them soon. “When?” asks Johnny. Soon, before Christmas. He loves them both!  Before he exits, Rage glances back at Sami. Caroline wonders what they were talking about. Sami muses what matters is actually what they did not talk about. All the good times the holidays bring to mind and she suspects he felt the same!
- Chad is mourning alone at Lexie’s grave. She devil Kristen shows up
and says hello. Chad stands up and decides he was about to leave. She hopes she did not make him uncomfortable. Chad stammers he is not
used to her being around the family. She understands and assures him
she has enjoyed their talks and wishes to build on it. Matter of fact, papa Stefano wanted to talk to him too. She invites him to join herself and EJ
in the upcoming DiMera video conference call. They ought to put some family into their holiday season. Lonely Chad agrees to partake, hugs her and walks away. Kristen is pleased. She pinches some flowers from another grave and coldly tosses them onto Lexie’s.
- Sami admits to Caroline that she is frustrated not knowing what Rafe wants from her. They seem to take two steps forward, then two steps back. Caroline gets her to admit that on some level she agreed to plan Gabi’s wedding to be near Rafe. However, “the truth is …” Caroline knows what she was going to say – that she has feelings for EJ too. Sami assumes she will disapprove.Caroline noticed he has seemed nicer of late. Sami gasps he does seem to have changed. She is seeing a new selfless side to him. Caroline sighs the heart wants what it wants and is sometimes torn. Sami gasps that is it exactly. Rafe brings back all the old times and yet with EJ there is this pull. She is at a loss over what to do. Caroline suggests she not do anything foolish. She has been flip flopping between these two men for a long time. Sami realizes this could be her last chance so she needs to get it right! EJ now walks in from the cold …
