CLIFFHANGER!

Previously on SOAP SINS
- The following morning, Dakota ventured to Chip’s new office on Sunset Boulevard. He was smoking a Cuban cigar and grinned upon seeing her. “The first few episodes of our now online soap opera were such a hit that they want the show on European TV.”
- She smiled and prettily planted herself in the chair across from his mahogany desk. “That’s wonderful! Which countries?”
- “Er, I dunno, but they’re all in Europe.”
- Dakota looked him in the eye, her smile as hard as a ruby. “You also have more wonderful news.”
- “I do?”
- “Yes, you do, darling. You have a brand new co-executive producer and her name is Dakota Diamonelle ...!”

The story now continues ...

- Chip stared as he considered his next move.
- Dakota stared back at him, her eyes filled with cat-like determination.
- He knew better than to try and dismiss her. No one dismissed soap
star Dakota Diamonelle. “You intend to blackmail me over my affair
with the African Queen.”
- Dakota smiled. “Darling, I don’t intend to blackmail you. I AM blackmailing you!”
- He extinguished the Cuban cigar when she impatiently waved away the smoke that had drifted in front of her face. It wasn’t an act of politeness, though. All of a sudden, Chip wasn’t feeling all that festive. “The current co-executive producer …”
- “Is a straight male upstart with a business degree and a condescending attitude towards women. He does not represent any of the demographics soap operas target. Matter of fact, I don’t think he even watches them, including the one he works for. All he cares about is throwing numbers around, acting like he knows what he’s doing.”
- Chip sighed. “I hear you.”
- She pulled that day’s issue of Variety out of her Alexander McQueen handbag and held it up. The magazine, that is, not the handbag.
- Chip peered at her.
- “According to an article I read, daytime numbers continue to dwindle. So who better to save the industry than the industry itself? I happen to
be the personification of a soap opera and I know what my fans want.”
- Chip leaned back in his chair. “Okay, I’ll bite.”
- She stood up and left the copy of Variety on his desk. “Wonderful. My first act as co-executive producer is …”
- “New business cards?” he mused.
- “Even better,” she quipped. “I’m hiring a real psychic to play one, and planning the hugest cliffhanger the soap world has seen in years.”
- Chip ran a hand through his thinning hair. “That sounds costly. Not the cheesy psychic, but the cliffhanger idea.”
- “Not necessarily. Our cliffhanger will involve something so frightening and exciting that no one will see coming. But it will be dangerous so we’ll have to be very careful. There could be casualties.”
“In the scene?”
- She suddenly lowered her voice. “For real …!”
