CHAPTER 17

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. LINK ONLY!

THE PSYCHIC

- Dakota was sitting next to Brent the blonde surfer dude in the
hair and makeup room. It was 5:30 in the morning, even too early
for the California sun to have made an appearance.
- Brent squinted as the hairstylist doused his hair with hairspray.
"You look kinda down."
- Dakota pouted and glanced at the TV monitor in the corner,
which would show only an empty set until the gang had arrived.
"That's because I am. Driving past Nick's empty parking spots
always reminds me that he's not around anymore."
- The makup artist rubbed some more rouge on Dakota's high
cheekbones. "Honey, I know just the thing that would help ease
the pain."
- Brent nodded. "Yeah, valium."
- The makup artist artist rolled her heavily painted eyes. "I meant
romance. Spend more time with your Mediterranean boyfriend."
- Dakota shook her head. "We are an item for publicity purposes
only."
- The makup artist winked. "You never know."
- "Odysseus has a boyfriend."
- Brent grinned. "You shoulda gone for an even younger guy like
me."
- Dakota dismissed the idea with an impatient wave of her manicured
lily-white hand. "Don't be silly, Brent! I would never get romantically
involved with a ... well .... a ...."
- "Flunky?" Brent finished.
- "Exactly!"
- The makeup artist brushed more powder on the soap star's t-zone.
- "Would you consider a psychic?"
- "For romance?"
- "No, for advice. I happen to know one who has a consultation
room on Hollywood Boulevard, near where Marilyn Monroe dyed her
hair blonde for the very first time."
- "Cool!" declared Brent. "You might come back platinum."
- Dakota said she would never do that but gratefully accepted the
card the hairstylist handed her with the psychic's name and address.
And so at the end of the filming day, when day had become night
again, she found herself entering an old structure on Hollywood
Boulevard. She asked the security guard inside what floor Madame
Etelka's office was on.
- "The elevator won't take you there, Miss. Her room is in between
the first and second floors. You have to go up that staircase."
- Dakota thanked him and proceeded to climb the old wooden stairs,
which creaked loudly underneath her Prada heels. The walls were
adorned with the black and white headshots of movie stars who
had belonged to the talent agency which used the space in the 1930s
and 1940s. Dakota wondered why Madame Etelka had left them there
and eventually reached the last step leading to the floor between the first and second floor.
- Madame Etelka was seated in the semi-darkness, a red candle flickering before her. Upon hearing who had sent the visitor, the well preserved psychic smiled and charmingly offered her a seat. Dakota sat down and
the psychic took her hand. She studied her palm for a moment, then suddenly closed it. "I cannot read this. Nothing is at it seems. You
must leave at once ...!"
