Soap Sins Monday, December 5, 2011 CHAPTER 12 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. LINK ONLY! THE SCHEME! - Dakota had spent the last week doing something she hadn’t done for years - that is, doing good. And it felt good, too. When she spent an afternoon helping hand out dinners to the homeless, she felt she was really making a difference. Some of the older street people rolled their eyes upon seeing her diamond ring glowing under the bright California sun, but she didn't seem to notice. She just smiled a warm smile and handed them the hot plate, convinced she had turned over a new leaf. She also signed on to help build a house in a small town in Mexico when she had her next break, but Marv her lawyer and manager objected to that. - "It could be dangerous down there." - Dakota insisted she would be fine. "I already know Mexico, silly. I honeymooned in Acapulco with my first husband." - After the brief meeting with Marv, she drove her red corvette to an apartment near the Beverly Center, and knocked at one of the main floor doors. She hoped Brent's latest girlfriend at the studio was right and this was the correct address. - The show jokester, who was still out of work, opened the door and stared suspiciously. "What can I do you for?" - Dakota removed her Yves St. Laurent sunglasses. "I think I can do something for YOU." - He rubbed his unshaven, tired jaw with a hand. "Doubt you would help me with child support." - Dakota sadly shook her head. "I would not because I don't believe in handouts." Pause. "How would you like to get your old job back?" - "Which one? The one flipping burgers before I was an actor or the gig at the studio?" - Dakota pushed her way in and motioned for him to shut the door. "Let's start a rumor!" - The jokester walked to the fridge for another cold beer and offered her one. She declined and then repeated "We need to start a juicy rumor." - "You're not my type." - "That's not what I meant. I meant a rumor that would put pressure on the studio to rehire you." - The jokester nodded. "Okay, I'll bite." - "I can circulate a rumor with the media that you have been seen with some studio honchos and it looks like your return is imminent." - The jokester drank some of the beer from the bottle in his hand, then grinned. "No sh*t. You can do that?" - She flashed a pearly white smile and put her sunglass back on. "I can and I will. Once it leaks, there will be so much excitement generated that Chip the producer will have no choice but to hire you back." - The jokester laughed. "Cool. Now prove it." - Dakota took off her sunglasses again and whipped her compact phone out of her latest leather handbag. The first phone call she made was to a freelance entertainment reporter who used to be the president of her fan club. She instructed her to start asking questions about the fired jokester being seen in secret negotiations with certain unnamed higher ups at the network. Of course, her former fan club president was thrilled. - Before she left the jokester's apartment, Dakota assured him he would be back at work within weeks. Even her schemes were now all about helping others. She then hopped in her corvette and sped home to the Hollywood Hills, to run lines with her best co-star - herself. - At a red light, she happened to glance into a TV store window, where all the televisions were on a Los Angeles news channel. They showed a photograph of Nick, whom she had married in Vegas weeks earlier, with the most horrific headline. Dakota read it and heard herself scream ... |
