Now without further ado ...

Once upon a dark and stormy Salem night ...
The pub is closed to the public but open for a most macabre celebration. There are eight in attendance. Caroline the hostess greets the guests as they come in from the rain. Roman, Abe, Kate, John and Marlena, Hope, and lastly but not leastly Victor. They gather at a table and Caroline produces something she has been saving for the occasion - her late husband Shawn's 40-year old bottle of Irish whisky. Everyone gets a glass and starts to drink. Caroline announces they are here to commemorate the end of an era, the end of Stefano DiMera's reign of terror. Ponytail Hope's eyes are filled with dread. Roman glances over with worry. Marlena sighs Stefano rose from the dead so many times. Kate sighs she never suspected his son Andre would do it. Commissioner Roman states the DNA test Shawn D did prove the body belonged to him. This time Stefano is dead. But what does being dead really mean? Kate always assumed John would be the one to kill the man who made him his pawn. Victor keeps drinking and declares they all would have been justified. He wickedly remembers how Marlena earned the respect of the phoenix when she shot him. Roman regrets they did not suspect Stefano of being after revenge when he first reared his head in Salem back in 1982. Carol notes they had no idea of the DiMera and Brady family feud that started when Santo DiMera, Stefano's father, took up with Colleen the nun Brady ... Roman recalls his evil ways, including hypnosis, his mastery of mind control. He concedes he could always stay a step ahead of the Salem P.D. A scene plays of Stefano taunting Abe and Roman from a monitor. He had gassed the entire hospital in order to escape and demanded justice for Marlena trying to kill him with a deadly toxins injection. Back to reality. Roman grins he now gets it was necessary to go outside the law to bring him down. Hope's eyes are haunted ...

John is sitting close to the woman he loves. He drawls it's great malt whiskey. Kate fills their glasses with more. Roman wonders where Abe's thoughts just went. Abe admits Stefano was good to Theo though in time he would have let him down as he did with all his descendants. For him love meant having power over someone and they all succumbed. He remembers a scene where pretty Lexie sided with her father and hugged him. Abe was bothered by it then as he is bothered by it now. They list all of Stefano's children, whose lives he ruined, including Kristen and EJ. Victor gets sarcastic about the evil Andre and Peter. He downs more whiskey and presses Kate. Did she shed any tears for her former flame? Kate confesses she did not. However, she praises him for helping her when she was a single mother without a cent. He quips Stefano made her a call girl. Kate corrects him as the other guests gasp at the Greek's gumption. Stefano allowed her to meet certain people who fast tracked her road to success. For that she is thankful. Marlena muses he wanted her to owe him. Victor mutters manipulations. Kate tells them Stefano could be charming and a scene of groom Stefano pouring champagne while praising his bride Katarina is shown. Victor now snarls they were made for each other. Kate acknowledges he blackmailed her into the union and was not suitable husband material. However, he understood her. The end of their marriage stemmed from his jealousy. Victor taunts she slept with Ian. Then she got control of his company only to lose it. Kate airily dismisses that past. Stefano is now out of all their lives. So they think ...

The guests are standing now and Marlena giggles her head is spinning from the hard stuff. John replies his rush is from the fact that Stefano now burns in hell. Caroline asks Victor about the connection between his brother Deimos and Dr. Malcolm, who was responsible for Bo's death. Victor dismisses it and suggests Stefano was responsible for what happened to Bo. Hope turns around and eagerly agrees. Victor grimaces he never got the favor DiMera owed him before he died. Roman chuckles about the judge friend Victor had in his pocket, the one who dismissed those tax evasion charges against Stefano. Kate rages at him for giving him the chance to come back and take his company away from her. Victor suspects she has sour grapes from being booted out. He admits they had a mutual respect. Kate reminds him Stefano waged war against them when he unfairly blamed their son for Tony's accidental death. Victor blames the booze for making him forget and decides the DiMera can burn in hell. Kate drinks to that. The guests agree the mood is somber so Caroline turns on her old fashioned radio. It sounds fuzzy due to the storm outside so she turns it off. They gather round again and keep remembering ...

Kate is curious about Stefano's obsession with Marlena. The blonde believes it stemmed from - as he told her - the fact that he found her to be his equal and that presented a challenge. A scene is shown of her playing chess against the master in his lavish abode. She held her own ... Marlena now comes back to reality and concludes through all the trials and tribulations, it was her love for John that kept her strong. John places an arm around her and gives her a kiss on the cheek. A scene is shown of glam Marlena in Stefano's bedroom, refusing to make a mockery of her and John's love by sleeping with his enemy. Stefano had thundered John was dead but Marlena could hear him regardless ... Marlena recounts what he put her kids through and lets it slip Sami was justified when she ... Diva Kate is all ears and asks whaaaaat? Marlena covers she meant when she left Salem with the kids and tries not to look flustered. John nods. Kate felt Marlena was about to say something. John recalls the suffering he inflicted. Abe feels no one has suffered more than John, whose identity was stolen from him. John admits he has no memory before Petrov brought him to Stefano all those years ago. However, he recently found out his father was a Korean War hero ... An old scene is shown of John heading to DiMera mansion to confront Stefano ... Victor marvels John was his most formidable rival. The pawn rose up to the master. John has not forgotten his pawn days but feels he got the best deal. Stefano died alone whereas he won the love of his life. He kisses her on the lips and she smiles with stars in her eyes ... Caroline cannot help but wonder why Hope is so quiet. Hope suggests she has nothing to say and prefers to listen. Roman watches her with worry. Hope flashes back to Stefano calling Bo banal, how she shot him dead as he laughed ... John now suavely stands to make a toast. Stefano spent decades trying to destroy lives but all he did was make them stronger and see that love conquers all. They raise their glasses in unison. CHECKMATE. The rain has stopped and the storm appears to be over. The guests disperse. Hope is the last one. Caroline hugs her and urges her to take care. Hope glances over at the door, where Stefano's suited GHOST stands laughing. She blinks and he disappears. Then she goes outside, though she cannot shake a strange feeling ... Alone, Caroline thanks Shawn for the whisky and turns off the static radio again. Then she turns out the lights and exits. The radio comes back on. Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries loudly plays. Stefano is seen wildly conducting this song of death on the battlefield ...
