Now without further ado ...

New Year's Eve festive fireworks take over the night sky. Abigail arrives at Ben's door, but he does not open. He comes right behind her with flowers, disappointed he is rather late and the store was out of champagne. Abigail only wanted to be with him and they give into their passion on his big bed, the room aglow from the romantic candles ... In the afterglow, she shyly asks about his resolution. Shirtless Ben announces he wants to tell her that he LOVES her and intends to spend more time with her this year. She gushes and blushes and whispers she loves him too, her eyes filled with emotional tears. They young lovers kiss in bliss ...

Tis a different story at the hospital, where Dr Dan is done with the cider and decides to get back to work. Maxine is worried about her friend and wonders why he called off his date plans tonight. She realizes it was not with Jennifer ... Dan mutters he mistakenly assumed the lady was ready to move on. Perhaps they are both not ready ... Meanwhile daughter Mel has just shared a hot kiss with Brady on the Kiriakis doorstep. They are oblivious to the fireworks above, caught up in the heat of their own connection. Before they can discuss, Maggie and Victor throw open the front door, having left a boring party early. The redhead shouts Happy New Year and Victor does not let them turn down her invitation to join them inside for some good cheer. Once inside, it becomes apparent that something has happened between Mel and Brady. Maggie is baffled. Victor wants to know what has the pair so jumpy. Mel is saved by a call from Dan, who apologizes for acting so angry when it was really only Nicole who was at fault. Mel comes back to the gang in the lavish living room moments after Brady has confirmed that something did indeed occur between them. Mel stammers she had a brief disagreement with Dan which Brady made better and adds she has to turn in early for tomorrow's nursing shift. Brady gallantly insists on driving her home. Maggie and Victor remain oblivious ...

Inside the pub, Eric is awaiting his now late date Serena. He gets sidetracked when Kayla asks for some help getting her strangely silent online date to talk. No luck. Kayla checks out back and informs Eric that Serena is nowhere to be seen ... Outside the pub, Serena lets Nicole have it and advises her to stay away from her as well as Eric. She already lost him so why bother breaking in! Nicole notes her emails were boring anyway. When she lectures her for lying to the fallen father about the evidence she withheld, Nicole scoffs. Nicole gets further defensive when she implies she is insane and calls her names, overreacting in her usual manner. That is when Eric opens the door. He solemnly sends Serena inside and glares at Nicole with accusing eyes. Nicole sighs he sees only the worst in her yet again. She just knows Serena is hiding something! Eric orders her to stay out of their lives forever ... Nicole walks away in tears ...

As the fireworks pop above, Sonny sits alone on a park bench, remembering Paul's plea for another chance, his promise to do anything for him. He stands up to go and speak with his former flame in person ... As the fireworks pop outside, Will and Paul sip champagne. Will stammers to new beginnings. Paul the player murmurs it could be a new beginning for the both of them and brazenly steps forward, his eyes filled with desire. Will's mouth trembles .... ring ring! Relieved by the interruption, Will insists he answer the call from his mother. And so Sonny has a nice chat with her in Japanese. After the call ends, Will returns to the topic of baseball and Paul's plans. Baseball was his whole life. Paul refills their champagne glasses and more innuendos flow from his lips ... Sonny gets to the door but is stopped from knocking by bellboy Derek, who asks if he is a friend ... He used to be - and him??? Derek confesses he wanted to be Paul's special friend but someone beat him to it. That someone is alone with him in the room as they speak. He suggests Sonny wait an hour, then asks him out for a drink. Sonny turns him down and heads home ... Inside, Will continues to converse about Paul's possibilities. Paul would rather discuss Will the writer's aspirations, still grinning. Will suggests Paul also focus on using his new time to settle down with a family. Paul slyly asks if that is what he really thinks he is after ... Will regains his professional composure and promises Paul he will still be in touch to check the article prior to publication. But now he must take his leave. Paul playfully thanks him for keeping him company. Outside, the writer pauses and sighs. Then he heads home to Sonny, who is drowning his sorrows in the champagne they were supposed to share, slurring here is to losing everything ... By the time Will arrives, Sonny is fast asleep on the sofa. Will finds the empty bottle, covers him, and kisses him on the cheek ... Back at the hotel, Paul thanks Derek for his discretion upon learning that an old friend was looking for him. He smiles to himself that Sonny wants to see him after all. He assumes it is personal not business related ...

Brady drives Mel and then walks her all the way to Dan's apartment door. He would like to discuss that kiss ... He is sorry he was out of line. Mel whispers she did kiss him back though ... Eric is at Serena's door and murmurs about moving forward. She claims she would rather not invite him inside her room right now as Nicole's presence would be felt. He assures her Nicole now knows she is the past and the pair share a sweet kiss. Serena smiles and bids him goodnight, closing the door. Then she turns and anxiously checks the envelope in her secret safe. It is still there and she holds it, a strange look in her eye ... Brady and Mel agree it must have been the fireworks, the moment ... Nicole shows up at the hospital and begs Dan to hear her out. Eventually Dan is unable to resist. She excuses that has been behaving wrong partly because of Eric, also partly due to the fact that she feels she is not perfect enough for him. Down to earth Dan lets her know that he and he alone decides how he feels about someone. He must now step away to the OR. Nicole breathes a sigh of relief ... Brady and Mel's eyes lock. They gasp they will forget that kiss. She excuses herself to bed and he bids her a happy new year. She stammers the same and shuts the door, leaning against it, pausing in the darkness, staring into space. Brady pauses in the elevator, also staring into space. They both appear to be having another "moment" ...
