THIS IS THE WAY IT WAS Lani paces with her coffee as JJ comes in with his tux on a hanger. She calls the nightmare a reality. Eli is about to marry evil Gabi … Doug is with Julie at the hospital. Enter Eli. She cannot wait to get the new pacemaker to perform Eli and Gabi’s ceremony …. At DiMera mansion Gabi meets with her flunky, who has what she needs for her app on this pacemaker day. She shall be in complete control … At the station after Shawn leaves Ciara a message to stay away from fugitive Ben, Rafe hauls in Hope, who acts like indignant Gina … Eli is sorry to tell Julie they cannot locate Kayla for her procedure … Kayla is with hiding Steve in a storage room and he thanks her for everything. When she mentions leaving he claims she cannot … Rafe cuffs petulant Princess Gina to a chair in an interrogation room. He returns to Shawn and assures him the others are safe. Shawn blames Kate and wants her charged! Rafe has no response but he does warn him this time Hope could be gone for good. So says Gina … Lani is exasperated about Eli loving, trusting tramp Gabi. JJ argues the wedding will not happen as Julie will have a new pacemaker but Lani knows Gabi could get control of that one too … Gabi’s flunky must make sure the doctor doing the procedure gets what he has in hand. She calls it their secret as curious Chad and Abigail arrive … Kayla has never taken orders from Steve! He tells her she gave many. She is miffed and must leave to help Julie. Steve quips someone else can help the tough old bird. Fact is he cannot allow her to go anywhere … JJ wants to believe Gabi will not go berserk again. Beside she believes Lani has left. Lani calls her a sociopath liar … Stylish Gabi wishes they would knock! Chad demands to know who the guy is. Gabi claims he is her jeweler with a vintage watch she got Eli and is having engraved. She refuses to let Chad see her surprise. Abigail makes a snide remark … Rafe warns Shawn that Gina claimed Hope could never come back. Shawn fumes Rolf can fix it. Alas Rolf said this Gina state was forever. Shawn vows to get his hands on the mad scientist …Kayla gives Steve a piece of her mind. She only helped him to bring Stefano down but she has not forgotten how he left her high and dry. Stefano Steve listens to her lament he threw away their perfect love and abandoned his family. Stefano sighs people grow apart. She makes for the door. He exclaims she is in danger and he is not threatening her, but Stefano is! She slowly turns around … JJ does not want to hear how much Lani loathes Gabi. She apologizes and he heads to the hospital to keep an eye on things. He assumes Gabi will be busy getting ready for her wedding. Lani is grateful he has been so great. He is just returning the favor … Julie is worried but Eli explains a cardiologist is all ready. She wants to go ahead and assures Doug tis a piece of cake …Gabi is dismissive until Chad brings up DiMera. Stefano is back … Steve sits up on the mattress and reasons Stefano might go after his loved ones, who need his protection. Kayla argues no one knows he is here. He warns she would not see him coming. The phoenix is closer than she could ever imagine …Eli hugs grandma Julie and gets going. She gushes she will marry him to his dream girl. After he departs Doug questions having the procedure and then heading to the wedding. Julie is enthused and explains Gabi repaired his broken heart … JJ bumps into Gabi’s flunky at the hospital and recognizes him from somewhere … Gabi calls Chad’s claim unreal. Chad points out Stefano tried to kill Hattie. Abigail urges her to listen up. Chad warns he will come after the woman who stole his company big time … Kayla is no scaredy cat and decides to call Justin. Stefano flashes back to getting her phone. He now innocently wonders where it is … Rafe updates Shawn on Roman leading a search for Rolf. Meanwhile they wait. Shawn wants Hope to have a scan that could find the microchip. Rafe, however, goes by the book and warns within 48 hours the D.A. wants him to charge her. Shawn realizes tis time to take action … Gabi’s geek claims he does not know JJ. He just works for a medical device company and excuses himself to make a delivery … Eli joins JJ and notes he does not look thrilled about today … Back at DiMera mansion Abigail explains to Gabi that dangerous Stefano now looks like Steve. Gabi does not believe it. Chad exclaims to phone Rafe. He has Hope, who was turned into Gina. Gabi believes they are both nuts … Gina proceeds to pick at her cuffs … Rafe wonders how to tell Doug and Julie about Hope as he heads out to do so. Shawn pays Hope a visit. He solemnly states he is her son and he knows she is somewhere in there. He warns she is smarter and stronger that Gina the joke and will come back to her loved ones. Gina gets indignant. He looks into her eyes and reminds her the time their family sailed into a storm. She was fearless and Gina is no match for her. Gina sheds tears but warns nothing will bring Hope back. She has ceased to exist … JJ apologizes to Eli as he was trying to place a familiar face. Eli gives him the rings to hold onto, for tonight must be smooth sailing … Lani remembers when Eli romantically proposed and she said yes. Then there were fireworks. Now she kneels down to pray for Julie to have a perfect procedure. Then Gabi must pay … Gabi pouts she is not listening and asks Abigail to help her get ready for the wedding. Abigail replies she is heading to the hospital to get tested for baby Mickey. Gabi decides to do the same and go see Julie. Abigail reminds her she once gave her a heart attack. Gabi brags they are close now … Julie and Doug are surprised to see Rafe, who came not about the wedding but about Hope … Gina is alone and being ignored … Shawn leaves Kayla an urgent message … Steve smoothly suggests Kayla left her phone on her desk.
