CHAPTER 5

Survivor

- Dakota Diamonelle, soap star, and Luella the fired soap writer were rolling around the floor of the waiting area in the Seventh Heaven Vegas Wedding Chapel. Eventually Dakota landed a good blow to the fired writer's jaw and she was out cold. Nick, the prime time fiancé (whose real name was Phil), rushed in and helped her to her feet, asking if she was alright. Dakota took out her ivory compact, examined her famous face, and breathed a sigh of relief. No bruises or scratches.
- "That b*tch tried to kill me!"
- Nick hugged her as the security men who had seen the incident on
the security camera arrived and carried away the still unconscious writer. He told them their statement would have to wait until his bride-to-be had regained her composure. "What can I do to make it better?" he asked. Actually, that was the most common line he said on the prime time show where he played a doctor, and he always said it convincingly well. At least he thought so.
- Dakota blinked. "Do you have the ring?"
- He whipped it out of the pocket of his Armani jacket and she cooed at the carats. Then she freshened up and they glided back into the chapel together, arm in arm, where the pastor dressed like Elvis awaited. The witnesses were the pastor's wife and mother-in-law, both of whom were big fans of Dakota, so she was in her element. She just loved the fans, almost as much as she loved herself. After saying I do, posing for a few pictures, signing autographs, she informed her prime time catch that she was ready. He carried her into the honeymoon suite, and Dakota made sure they consummated that marriage faster than you could say prenup.
- By the time the private jet had taxied into LAX the following morning, Dakota Diamonelle was major news. She had survived an attack on her life, received a diamond ring befitting a Kardashian, and married a prime time star all within 24 hours. Plus, it was a very good hair day.
- The paparazzi were waiting and the celebrity couple indulged them
with smiles and waves.
- Needless to say, Chip the producer was utterly thrilled about all the publicity. Dakota was sitting in the studio hair and makeup room when
he offered her his congratulations. "You should have told me! I would have arranged for a cake."  Chip was big on cakes. He didn't even give
a second thought to the writer who had lost her mind.
- Dakota glanced up at the TV monitor on the wall, where co-star Bill was doing a monologue, a glint in his inebriated eyes. She suddenly felt tired and said as much.
- "No worries," promised Chip. "You'll have next weekend free."
- Dakota waved away the makeup woman, who, as usual, had overdone the spray on tan stuff.  "I'll need to have all my things moved to Nick's house on Rodeo this weekend."
- Chip grinned. "You won't be there, though."
- "I won't?"
- "Not according to your contract. It's
fan event weekend and right now you're my biggest star ..."
