Soap Sins Monday, April 16, 2012 CHAPTER 30 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. LINK ONLY! BLOW UP! Previously on SOAP SINS Chip didn't miss a beat. "The network is about to make a major announcement about the show. I'm calling an emergency meeting first thing tomorrow morning. Oh. And bring Bill too, now that's he's back from the dead. Trust me, this is HUGE ...!" The story now continues ... - The entire cast of the soap opera had gathered in the studio, awaiting the arrival of the executive producer. There was no shortage of drama in the air, given the huge egos in the room, in addition to the huge happenings of late. - Bill was grinning and drinking from a flask as he answered questions about his faked death. Dakota flipped her hair and told her part of the story about bringing down the notorious mobster. Brent the blonde surfer dude boasted of his own involvement in the case and how he was one of the first people to know Nick was alive. Nick was nowhere, since this meeting had been called only for the cast and crew of the show. Dakota envied the fact that he was still sleeping in bed and wondered what Chip was planning to announce. She hated surprises almost as much as she hated call times before the California sun had risen. - The door opened and the African Queen waltzed in. She smiled across the room at Dakota, who smiled back. Brent slowly whistled. "Two divas not at odds. Amazing." - The door opened again and Chip the producer entered, flanked by PR people and the network president of daytime programming. Dominic the hunk whispered to the jokester he hoped they weren't going to get cancelled. His wife was pregnant again. The twinkle in the jokester's eyes was quickly replaced with dread. Was this the end of another daytime drama and the beginning of another pointless, rambling talk show people only watched in the background anyway? - Sensing the tension in the air, Chip got straight to the point. "Ladies and gentlemen, our show is being migrated online." - Dakota replied they already had an online presence, via the official show website, the network one, and a popular update site written by a brunette in Canada. - The president of daytime programming smiled like he didn't mean it. The room fell silent. "Recent market research indicates more and more fans are watching the show online, so the network will be using the regular timeslot to broadcast online. We are planning to develop a huge internet presence to attract the segment of the younger market that watches TV purely online. On regular television, however, the show will not air. This means there will have to be budget cuts, until we have proven to all our regular advertisers that the online numbers are highly valuable, given the fact that online viewers purchase more as consumers. We are very excited to have the first soap opera which migrates from traditional TV to entirely online." - "And viewers will not be charged to watch the show," Chip explained. - One of the young PR girls added it was a great opportunity to gain a strong presence in the key demographic. - Chip added that at first, the show would be reduced to half an hour. That meant cuts. He cleared his throat. "Unfortunately, the cast will have to be downsized ..." - When Dakota returned to her home in the Hollywood Hills, Nick was in his bathrobe, enjoying a cappuccino on the terrace. "Why the long face, sweet thing?" - "As of next month, the show is going to be entirely online." - He sipped his cappuccino. "Sounds like progress." - She sat beside him and checked her red nails in the sunlight. They were as smooth and impeccable as when she'd exited the spa an hour earlier. "The cast is being downsized. Your ex-wife was the first casualty." - "The African Queen will survive with those millions she makes in cosmetic endorsements," he quipped. "Can I get you a cup of caffeine?" - Dakota shook her head and walked back inside to pour it herself. In the kitchen, the TV was on the usual 24 hour news station. A headline flashed across the screen as Nick sauntered in behind her. "At least now we're safe from that demented mobster. Being alive suits me so much better than being dead." - Dakota's red lips gasped as she pointed at the TV. Her phone was already ringing with text messages from Brent, Bill, the jokester and the president of her fan club. "Oh my God," she exclaimed. "THE STUDIO JUST GOT BLOWN UP ...!" |
