Back in the real world Kayla complains to Sarah about EJ's lean budget proposal. Sarah offers to help with more hours since she has no hubby waiting at home. Actually said hubby is about to suffocate sleeping beauty Phil with a pillow but Phil's eyes fly ... Jack sighs he stopped celebrating his birthday cos it was around the same time Abigail perished. Jen insists their girl would want to celebrate him and lights the candle. He blows it out ... Steph promises Alex her folks know he is a reformed playboy. He praises mama Adrienne and Steph reminds him he grew up with Justin. He says Adrienne too and she gushes his mom would be proud ... The ghost of demure Adrienne informs Steve she is still dead. She came to give him a message. John is in heaven now and she promises to watch over him. He cries he misses her. She misses him too. Alas tis time to leave. Steve wakes up alone on the sofa and spies a holy card on the table. A sign ... - Kayla complains to Sarah about her recent run-in with Xander before she heads home ... Kate asks Sarah to let her know if she has seen her missing book. Not so far but she will keep her eyes open. Kate suddenly realizes the guard left Phillip's room to use the loo and rushes in to check on her son ... Jack and Jen eat the cupcake and she wonders about his wish. Hers is to never hear Cat Green's name again ... Steph insists Alex is very spiffy and suggests a way to help him destress. It starts with a smooch ... Steve greets Sweetness when she comes home. He must have had too muck whisky at John's wake cos he dreamt of Adrienne. He repeats what she said. Kayla believes it was real ... Kate sees her son is awake and thanks God. Sarah is suspicious of why Xander was in his room. He claims he was about to get a doctor. Phil asks his mother what happened. She orders Xander out and so does Sarah. The great Scot acts offended and walks out but lingers nearby ... - Philip wants to know what happened. Kate coos he should tell them. Sarah must examine the Salem patient first. Mama Kate steps away. Phil feels like he was run over by a truck. Sarah suggests tests. He wonders why Xander was in his room ... Kate accuses the on duty cop of negligence. He felt ill after having a coffee. Kate suspects sinister Xander drugged it ... Jack and Jen meet the late breathless Steph and Alex at the bistro. Surprise guest of honor Steve has yet to arrive with Kayla ... Kayla suggests a bistro dinner is what Steve needs and tells him Steph is already waiting ... Jada confronts Xander in front of the Salem Inn. She just spoke with Kate. They need to discuss Philip! - Steve and Kayla arrive at the bistro where his surprise retirement party is waiting. Steve is touched his daughter wanted to raise his spirits. Alex calls him sir. They sit at a lavender tablecloth and talk. Jack wonders who will protect Salem without Black Patch. Steve has been at it for 40 years and admits back at the beginning he and Bo were enemies. He was one angry bitter dude but then Kayla the sweet nurse came into his life. Flashback of her gently removing his patch to clean his wounds. They went through much together. He kisses her hand ... Jada has just heard that the officer stationed at Phil's room got suddenly ill and had to step away. Xander denies seeing him. Jada demands to know why he went to see Phil at all. Just to visit little brotha. Jada warns he is talking now and intends to get a statement so he should stick around Salem ... Sarah assures Kate she too wants answers but first they must make sure Philip is stable ... - Kayla remembers how Steve went from badass guy to good guy ... Steve remembers how little sis Adrienne showed up and brought his and Jack's broken family back together as only Adrienne the good could. Jack praises Steve their rock. He even gave him his kidney. They all raise their glasses to Steve, a Salem original. Jada arrives and apologizes for being late cos Philip apparently woke up. Steve remembers his adventures with her dad Marcus. He sighs he was the best and like John he left them too soon. A sad silence descends ... - Kate ends her call with Roman. Sarah informs her she can return to her son's room. Kate texts Jada to come and help them get some answers. Sarah takes a deep breath, seeming to sense the worst case scenario ... Jack and Jen ask Steve if he is up for another case cos they need help finding Julie's necklace. Steve admits Bo suggested they should partner up and gets to thinking. Kayla smiles. He later ends a call with Bo, who checked with Hope. Both are on board so Black Patch is back in action! He will keep Jack and Jen posted in Boston and wishes Billy Jack a happy birthday. Now Steve and Kayla are alone with Steph and Alex. He hugs his little sweetness and takes big sweetness home. Stressed Alex wishes Steph's dad liked him ... Jack stops in front of the Salem Inn and shares his birthday wish with Jen - that they come home to see Salem more often. She promises and they share a heartfelt hug ... - Xander enters the bistro for a much needed drink. Alex gives him the good news that Philip woke up. The great Scot already heard. Alex believes tis good news and will see him at the office tomorrow. Xander mutters maybe ... Alex mutters to Steph he wonders whether he knows he is about to get arrested for assault ... Kate is back with Philip and here come Jada and Sarah. Jada probes what he remembers. He was the victim of an awful beating. Kate concludes it was Xander. Phil pauses and then denies it was Xander, much to their astonishment. Phil, however, knows exactly what he is doing ... Steve and Kayla discuss his almost retirement. She just wants her hero to be happy. They seal the deal with a kiss as he marvels he is a lucky man indeed. She made him want to be a better man and he loves her with all his heart.
